Three generations of geographers
Today has been an emotional day. As I end the day, I reflect on revisiting the experimental plot in Almáchar with the #SOSVITI project—eight years after I first worked there as a doctoral student. This location holds a special place in my career, as I spent four incredible years here alongside José Damian Ruiz Sinoga and José María Senciales González.
This photo speaks volumes. It captures three generations of geographers—myself, Prof. Johannes Ries (my Doktorvater), and Laura Cambronero (one of my first doctoral students)—standing together in front of a rainfall simulator. Each of us, with unique experiences and perspectives, contributing to the ever-evolving world of geography, geomatics, and erosion research.
Beyond measuring soil erosion for the project, SOSVITI is also about strengthening long-standing collaborations and fostering new ones. Being surrounded by such inspiring colleagues—María Teresa González Moreno, Lucía Moreno Cuenca, Jesús González Vivar, EGEMAP (Environment, Geography, and Mapping), Universidad de Granada, DaSCI (Andalusian Institute in Artificial Intelligence), and Manuel Seeger—makes this journey even more rewarding.
Who knows where the future of soil science and erosion studies will take us? But one thing is certain: collaboration and mentorship remain at the heart of scientific progress.
